A rotisserie needs more than a motor and a spit. The support structure has to hold the motor securely, support the opposite end of the spit, keep the drive train aligned, and remain stable while the load turns for hours over a fire.
The exact setup depends on the size of the rotisserie, the weight of the food, the type of pit or cooking area, and whether the system is freestanding or permanently mounted. This guide explains the basic support components we use with our rotisserie systems: posts, bases, pit attachment brackets, spit-support brackets, and bearings.

Why does the support system matter?
The motor may provide the turning force, but that force has to be carried through the motor mount, spit, opposite-end support, and the rest of the structure. If any part of that system moves, twists, flexes, or goes out of alignment, the rotisserie can become harder to turn and less stable.
A good support system keeps the motor and spit in the correct relationship to each other, maintains the cooking height, and gives the rotating load a solid structure to work against.
Motor support
The motor needs a rigid mounting point that can resist the torque created as the spit turns, especially when the load is heavy or not perfectly balanced.
Depending on the installation, the motor may be supported by a freestanding post-and-base assembly, mounted directly to a steel pit, attached to a masonry structure, or incorporated into a custom frame.
The important thing is that the support does not shift or twist under load. A motor that is securely mounted but attached to a weak or flexible structure can still move enough to create alignment and drive problems.
Post adjustment
Adjustable posts make it possible to change the height of the motor and spit relative to the fire. That can be useful when cooking different sizes of food, working with different heat sources, or fine-tuning the distance between the food and the fire.
Our post systems use simple locking hardware to provide approximately 18 inches of adjustment. The posts used with our systems are approximately 22 inches long and fit the corresponding motor collars, bases, and brackets designed for them.
Posts may differ in material, weight, and construction depending on the load and the base or mounting system they are intended to work with. They should not automatically be assumed to be interchangeable.
Why should the spit stay level?
A level spit helps the load remain predictable as it turns. If the motor end and support end are at different heights, the food can tend to shift toward the lower side, and the drive components may no longer remain properly aligned.
Both ends should be supported at compatible heights, and any height adjustment should be made with the full drive system in mind rather than moving only one component.
Base systems
A freestanding base system is one of the simplest ways to support a rotisserie when there is no existing pit structure to mount to.
Our base systems are designed to sit on a flat, level, non-combustible surface and support the corresponding posts. This makes the rotisserie easier to position, remove, store, and use in different locations without permanently modifying a pit or masonry structure.
Different base systems are made for different load ranges and use different materials and weights. The matching posts are designed for those bases and may not fit other base sets.
Where should a freestanding rotisserie base be placed?
The base should sit on a stable, level, non-combustible surface. Avoid soft ground, unstable paving, or any surface that allows the posts or bases to rock under load.
Remember that the rotisserie is carrying a rotating load. Even relatively small movement at the base can become more noticeable at the spit and motor.
Pit attachment brackets
If you already have a steel or masonry pit, you may not need a freestanding base. In that case, the posts can often be attached directly to the pit using suitable mounting brackets.
The correct bracket depends on the shape and construction of the pit. A steel tank, fabricated box, or masonry wall may each require a different mounting arrangement.
Our attachment brackets are designed to accept compatible posts and provide pre-drilled mounting points for fastening the bracket to the pit structure.
What is a flush-mount bracket?
A flush-mount bracket is used when the post can be mounted directly against the side or surface of the pit without needing additional clearance.
This is often the simplest arrangement when the pit wall is relatively flat and there are no lips, flanges, or other obstructions in the way.
What is an offset bracket?
An offset bracket moves the post away from the surface of the pit. This can be useful when the pit has a projecting lip, edge, or other feature that would interfere with a direct vertical post installation.
The amount of offset needs to be appropriate for the pit and the expected load so that the bracket remains rigid during operation.
What is a flange-style bracket?
A flange-style bracket provides another direct mounting option where a vertical assembly can be bolted securely to the pit or support structure.
The exact bracket style matters less than the quality of the mounting surface and the ability of the assembly to resist the forces created by the turning load.
Can I attach a rotisserie to a masonry pit?
Yes, provided the masonry is strong enough and the bracket is anchored correctly. A masonry wall also needs enough width and structural integrity to support the attachment hardware.
The original description for our system assumes a masonry wall width of roughly 6 inches or more for this type of installation, but the actual suitability depends on the wall construction and anchoring method.
Can I attach a rotisserie to a steel pit?
Yes. Steel tanks, fabricated pits, and custom boxes can provide very solid mounting points when the structure itself is sufficiently rigid.
The attachment should be made to material strong enough to resist twisting and repeated load. Thin sheet metal may require reinforcement even if the bracket itself is heavy-duty.
Spit-support brackets
The end of the spit opposite the motor needs its own support. That support has to carry the weight of the spit and food while allowing the rod to rotate freely.
A good spit-support bracket should also be compatible with the post or structure holding it and ideally allow the height to be adjusted so the spit can remain level with the motor.
Our support brackets are designed to work with our posts and common spit configurations, with provisions for bearings or low-friction support where appropriate.
Why can't I just rest the spit on a metal bracket?
You can in some simple systems, but friction and wear become more important as the load increases and the cook gets longer.
A heavy spit rubbing directly on a fixed metal surface creates resistance that the motor must overcome. It can also wear both the spit and support over time.
Bearings
Bearings reduce friction between the rotating spit and the support structure. They can make the system turn more smoothly and reduce wear on the spit and brackets.
For larger or longer-running rotisseries, a proper bearing or bearing-supported bracket can be a significant improvement over a simple metal rest.
The bearing has to fit the spit or supporting shaft correctly and be suitable for the load and operating environment.
Do bearings need to be protected from heat?
Yes. Bearings, lubricants, seals, and surrounding hardware can all be affected by excessive heat.
Position supports and bearings as far from direct flame and concentrated heat as practical, and use the overall design of the rotisserie to limit heat exposure.
Compatibility between posts, bases, and brackets
One of the easiest mistakes when assembling a rotisserie from separate components is assuming that similar-looking parts are interchangeable.
Posts can differ in dimensions, material thickness, hole spacing, mounting methods, and intended load. Bases are often designed around a particular post size, while motor collars and spit-support brackets may require their own matching dimensions.
Our bases, posts, and brackets are designed as systems. Some components may work together across models, but compatibility should be confirmed before ordering parts separately.
Will SpitJack posts work with my own motor?
Possibly, but you may need to fabricate or adapt the motor mounting arrangement. Our posts are designed around our own motor collars and brackets.
If you are combining one of our posts with a different motor, check the motor mounting pattern, dimensions, load, and how the motor will be secured to the post.
Will my own spit work with a SpitJack support bracket?
It may, depending on the diameter and shape of the spit and the type of support or bearing being used.
Measure the spit carefully and compare it with the bracket or bearing specifications before assuming compatibility.
What if my pit requires a custom mounting arrangement?
Custom fabrication is sometimes the most practical answer. Pits vary widely in height, wall thickness, shape, materials, and available mounting surfaces.
In those situations, the best approach may be to use compatible SpitJack components where they fit and fabricate the brackets or adapters needed to connect them safely to the existing structure.

Do I need a base if I already have a pit?
Not necessarily. If the pit provides strong mounting points, post attachment brackets may allow you to mount the rotisserie directly to it.
Can I use one base system with different posts?

How much height adjustment do SpitJack posts provide?

Should the motor and support post always be the same height?

Can I mount one to an old propane or oil tank?
A fabricated steel tank can make a strong pit structure, but the attachment area may need reinforcement depending on the wall thickness and bracket location.
Why is the opposite end of the spit so important?
The support end carries part of the weight and keeps the spit aligned with the motor. Poor support can increase friction, create sag, and make the system harder to turn.
Do I need a bearing on the support end?
