SpitJack (the company) was founded in 2004 from a passion for food and cooking with fire. While taking in the pleasures of wood burning in our home fireplace we wondered if we could extend the experience by using the open flames for cooking. After much research and discovery, we found some very practical, safe, and affordable tools to use and were soon enjoying rotisserie and grilled meats right from our home fireplace.
Since then we have expanded this concept and practice to the warmer seasons and the outdoors. By introducing firepit cooking systems, professional/competition quality grills and BBQ smokers, portable rotisseries and whole animal rotisseries, our catalog now gives you a way to cook with fire all year 'round. Our accessories like knives, dinner bells, specialty gloves and wood splitting equipment provide you everything you need to prepare and complete your fire cooking experience.
Bruce Frankel, a former chef/restaurateur, began his culinary career in 1980 with French nouvelle cuisine and ended with a grand homage to New England cooking (The Colony Restaurant, Boston). It was there that he realized that the essence of all great cuisines was in the creative expression of regional history, culture and taste. In New England, this includes fireplace cooking. In America, this includes grilling and traditional barbecue.
SpitJack's warehouse, offices and retail showroom are located in Easthampton, Massachusetts. The retail showroom, opened in 2008, displays most of the products on the web site plus many that are not posted online. Please come by and visit us if you are local or are ever visiting central Massachusetts.
Teams and Sponsorships
Competitive BBQ has become a significant "sport" and is very popular by those who partake directly, for everyone close by who gets to share the results, and lately a much larger audience who watches (drooling) on TV. We have our own team called Meat & 3 and we don't have too many bouts to our record yet, but we did beat out a national champion and winner of "Jack" in at least one category in our last event. It is a lot of fun and some VERY serious cooking and we can't wait for the next comp.
We also sponsor Mighty Swine Dining who we met at the Massachusetts state competition last fall. They were struggling with an inferior injector needle so we lent them one of ours with a promise that if they won Grand Champion they could have it (there were 45 teams and at least 3 state champions in the field so I thought it was a safe offer). Well, they won! and they really kicked ass - 3 first place walks. I gave them that injector and a lot more by becoming a sponsor. These guys are great competitors and also excellent professional chefs in their other lives. Looking forward to going with them to the Royal this fall.
There a few sounds associated with SpitJack. First there are our dinner bells. You might find a sound sample to download on the product page. If you make it to our retail showroom, we have these massive wind chimes that create amazing tones (music to sooth the savage beast).
