If you cook in your fireplace or campfire, this trivet could be the most important tool you can use. It is designed to hold an 8-10 inch pan or pot 3-4 inches high.
The technique is to bring hot embers under the trivet to heat the pot. In this way you can carefully control the heat. This is the way it was done when the fireplace was used for virtually all the cooking. The fire would create the coals that would be dragged under the trivet (and sometimes on top of the pan) to provide the heat. In this way you can also extend the fire by having many pans going at once.
