This is a very interesting category of cookers. Although they've been around since the 60's (when ex-soldiers brought them back from their tours in Japan) they were popularized more recently by the Big Green Egg company which makes a line of ceramic grills.

Now there are a dozen choices of all shapes and sizes but they all have the same basic features and advantages (and disadvantages).What they do very well; low temp smoking, high temp baking, use charcoal effeciently. Where are the Big Green Eggs and Kamado Joes? They are not allowed to be sold online - only at stocking dealers. I'm not a fan of BGE and I think they are overpriced. Kamado Joe is a good value and a solid product.
